  • 1.	█ General Objective: Contribute to the planning and participative management of two Protected Natural Areas (PNAs) and the sustainable development of populations situated in the PNA zones. █ Specific Objectives: 1) The collaborative strategic planning and participation of civil society, local populations and the State in the creation of the Megantoni National Sanctuary and the Machiguenga Communal Reserve. 2) The local population develops sustainable management plans for the Megantoni National Sanctuary, the Machiguenga Communal Reserve and surrounding areas. █ Photo: Project Name: “Support for the participative conservation and sustainable development in and around the Protected Natural Areas: the Megantoni National Sanctuary and the Machiguenga Communal Reserve, Peru”.   • 2.	Activity 1.1.1. Identification, prioritization and signposting of vulnerable areas. █ Goal: 12 vulnerable areas identified, prioritized and signposted. Result: 26 sites identified and prioritized (217%) and 6 sites signposted (50%) █ In the framework of the Master Plans for the Megantoni National Sanctuary and the Machiguenga Comunal Reserve, main risk areas were identified in both PNAs, prioritizing them according to level of risk. █ Map: Megantoni National Sanctuary – Prioritization of vulnerable areas.

  • 4.	Signposting: After the approval of the Signposting Plan for the Megantoni National Sanctuary, between May and August 2008, the first six signs for vulnerable areas of level 1 priority were installed. █ Photo: Signpost in the Estrella settlement.
  • 5.	Six signposts have been installed along the border of the Megantoni National Sanctuary: Kinkateni and Yoyato rivers; Nueva Convención settlement; Abra Kirajateni; Estrella settlement; Chingoriato River; Saringabeni River. █ Map: Megantoni National Sanctuary– Location of the installed signposts.
  • 6.	Activity 1.1.2. Registration of agricultural lots in the Megantoni National Sanctuary.  Goal: 52 lots registered in 143 hectares. Result: 37 lots registered (71%) in 602.75 hectares (422%). █ During the formulation of the Master Plans for the Megantoni National Sanctuary (2005-2006), it was discovered that 52 agricultural lots are illegally occupied within the Sanctuary.  According to information received by the local population, the 143 hectares were distributed in 7 units.   • 7.	Activity 1.1.3. Appraisal of the agricultural lots in the Megantoni National Sanctuary. █ Goal: 143 hectares appraised. Result: 602.75 hectares appraised (422%). █ For example, in Kirajateni two surveyors were contracted to appraise the eleven agricultural lots in the Kirjateni unit within the Sanctuary, including the precarious housing structures. █ Photo: Locals in Kirajateni.
  • 8.	In the Mankoriari Unit in the Megantoni National Sanctuary, landholders present a proposal to appraise their crops, the same proposal that was accepted in good faith for the project. █ Photo: Participation in the appraisal of lots located in Mankoriari.
  • 9.	Activity 1.1.4. Acquisition of agricultural lots in the Megantoni National Sanctuary. █ Goal: 143 hectares recovered. Result: 443.15 hectares recovered (310%). █ All of the lots were appraised, with exception of La Libertad whose landowners decided not to sell their lot, but instead withdrew voluntarily for economic compensation (52.15 hectares). Registration of the Protected Natural Areas in the Public Registry. █ Goal: 2 Protected Natural Areas (MNS and MCR) registered. Result: 2 Protected Natural Areas (MNS and MCR) registered (100%)
  • 10.	Activity 1.2.1. Establishment of management committees. █ Goal: 2 management committees formed and recognized. Training for the management committees. █ Goal: 4 training events. Result: 0 training events (0%). ║█║ Activity 1.2.3. Financial assistance for the management committees. █ Goal: 4 management committee meetings. Result: 2 management committee meetings (50%).
  • 12.	Activity 1.2.4. Establishment of the Contract Executor for the Administration of the Machiguenga Communal Reserve (ECA – Maeni). █ Goal: 1 ECA formed and recognized. ECA-MAENI is formed, composed of 14 native communities, three indigenous federations and 1 farming federation of settlers.
  • 13.	Activity 1.2.5. Training for the Contract Executor for the Administration of the Machiguenga Communal Reserve. █ Goal: 3 training events.   • 14.	The “Machiguenga Communal Reserve Participative Workshop” took place April 24-25, 2007 in the Kirigueti Native Community. Delegates who participated were trained on the general role and functions of INRENA and SINANPE in the Special Regime for the Administration of Communal Reserves, and in the nature of the Contract for Administration. Finally, on November 30 2007, the “Journal of Training and Information for ECA-Maeni” was developed in Quillabamba. Training of delegates on the nature of the Contract for Administration that should be endorsed by INRENA. █ Photo: “Machiguenga Communal Reserve Participative Workshop” ║█║ Activity 1.2.6.   • 15.	Activity 1.2.7. Financial assistance for the Contract Executor for the Administration of the Machiguenga Communal Reserve. █ Goal: 4 ECA meetings. Result: 4 ECA meetings (100%) █ On April 26 2007, the Primary Ordinary Assembly was held in the Kirigueti Native Community. The topic of the Management Committee constitution was raised, agreeing to move forward the convention for its formation; at the same time agreeing on the topic of the process of creating the Master Plan and an plan of operation May- December 2006 of the ECA-Maeni.
  • 16.	Activity 1.3.1. Convention for the development process of the Master Plan. █ Goal: 2 conventions transpire.
