Generalities

Problem to be solved

Whit the support  of the  MacArthur Foundation (Donation Nº05-84418-000-GSS) we  have achieved an important progress  in the formulation of  the Master Plan of the Megantoni National Sanctuary and the Machiguenga Communal Reserve, as well as the conformation of their Management Committees and, in the case of the reserve, the Contract Executor for the Administration (CEA-Maeni).

However, the mechanisms of citizens participation for the management of this two areas (Management committees and CEA-Maeni) are not fully consolidated and need a period of training, technical consultancy and  companionship so they can entirely fulfil the development of the Master Plans and guarantee the conservation of those areas.

Main Idea

The proposal is oriented to make the citizens’ participation easier, so they can contribute to the conservation of the biodiversity of two natural protected areas of Peru (Megantoni National Sanctuary and the Machiguena Communal Reserve) and the sustainable development of the local population. Beneficiaries.

Directly Favoured people

The local population directly favoured with this Project is composed by around 3,033 families distributed in 16 native communities (1,020 families) and 26 peasant settlements (2,013 families) adjacent to the Machiguenga Communal Reserve and the Megantoni National Sanctuary.

• Machiguenga Communal Reserve (east flank  of the Vilcabamba mountain chain)
• Buffer zones, almost over a million hectares.

Objectives

Global Objetive

To strengthen and consolidate the mechanisms for citizens’ participation in the management of the Megantoni Nacional Sanctuary and the Machiguenga Comunal reserve.

Specific Objetives

1. Management Committees of the Megantoni Nacional Sanctuary and the Machiguenga Communal Reserve are implemented and working.
2. Contracts for the administration of the the Megantoni Nacional Sanctuary and the Machiguenga Communal Reserve ongoing.
3. Master Plans of the Megantoni Nacional Sanctuary and the Machiguenga Communal Reserve in execution.

Expected results

 The expected outcomes are directly related to the specific objectives of the project. In order to achieve each specific objective there are some activities to execute.

EXPECTED OUTCOME 1 (EO 1)

Management committees of the Megantoni National Sanctuary and the Machiguenga Communal Reserve are trained, implemented and working.  

• Activitives in order to achieve the EO 1:

1.1. Management Committees  training.

1.2. Thecnical support for the Management committees.

1.3. Support the development of the Management committees.

EXPECTED OUTCOME 2 (EO 2)
Contracts for the Administration of the Megantoni National Sanctuary and the Machiguenga Communal Reserve ongoing.

• Activities in order to achieve EO2:

2.1. Training for the Contract Executor for the Administration of the Machiguenga Communal Reserve.
2.2. Support to the implementation and functioning of the Contract Executor for the Administration of the Machiguenga communal Reserve.

2.3. Signing of the Contract for the Administration of the Megantoni National Sanctuary.

2.4. Initial execution of the Contract for the Administration of the Megantoni National Sanctuary.

EXPECTED OUTCOME 3 (EO3)

Master Plans of the Megantoni National Sanctuary and the Machiguenga Communal Reserve in execution.

3.1. Environmental Education

3.2. Communal surveillance
3.3. Reforestation with different purposes
